Maps by Herb Lester

When Herman Melville famously wrote, “It is not down in any map; true places never are,” I do not think he knew that one day Herb Lester Associates would be creating stylized maps which attempt to capture the culture of the cities they depict. The beautiful maps offer more than just the lines and distances, (which now a days can so easily be viewed on smart phones). The maps offer a series of strange locations that as a whole, seem to capture the zeitgeist of their cities. The uniquely crafted maps detailing old bookstores, dive bars, and park benches capture a sense of spirit that Melville might not have believed possible.
